Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a hypothetical type of artificial intelligence that matches or surpasses human capabilities across virtually all cognitive tasks.
Unlike artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), whose competence is confined to well-defined tasks, an AGI system can generalize knowledge, transfer skills between domains, and solve novel problems without task-specific reprogramming. Beyond the scope of AGI lies artificial superintelligence (ASI), which would outperform the best human abilities across every domain by a wide margin.
The creation of AGI is a primary objective for several major technology companies, including OpenAI, Google, xAI, and Meta. Research into this field is widespread; a 2020 survey identified 72 active AGI research and development projects across 37 countries.
AGI frequently appears as a central theme in science fiction and futures studies. However, there is significant contention regarding its safety. Some AI experts and industry figures argue that mitigating the risk of human extinction posed by AGI should be a global priority, while others contend that the development of AGI is currently at too remote a stage to present such an existential risk.
