The Gold of the Gods
Amber, often poetically referred to as “The Gold of the Gods,” is a fossilized tree resin. It has been highly valued since the Neolithic times for its striking colors—ranging from orange and brown to occasional shades of red—and its inherent natural beauty. Since classical antiquity, it has been utilized extensively as a gemstone.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, amber serves practical roles in various traditions; it is commonly used in the production of jewelry and has historically functioned as a healing agent in folk medicine.
Scientifically, there are five distinct classes of amber categorized based on their specific chemical constituents. Because amber originates from soft, sticky tree resin, it frequently contains inclusions of organic matter, such as animal and plant materials, preserved within the stone.
Specific geological occurrences lead to specialized terminology for certain types of amber:
- Resinite: The term used for amber found specifically within coal seams.
- Ambrite: The specific term applied to amber discovered within New Zealand coal seams.
