M.2’s Origins and Making It Suitable for Storage M.2, formerly known as Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a feature for internally mounted computer expansion cards and associated connectors. M.2 replaces the mSATA standard, which uses the physical card layout and connectors of PCI Express Mini Card. By using a more flexible physical feature, M.2 allows different module widths and lengths, and when combined with the availability of more advanced interface features, generally makes M.2 more suitable than mSATA for solid-state storage applications, especially in smaller devices.

There are three options for creating interfaces and command sets for logical device interfaces and command sets that can be used with M2 storage devices, depending on the interface and current operating system support.

The first ranking of M.2 expansion cards on the market is 22 mm wide and has lengths of 30, 42, 60, 80, and 110 mm. M.2 module codes include both the width and length of a particular module; for example, 2242 is a module code that indicates a module that is 22 mm wide and 42 mm long, while 2280 is a module that is 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. Two-slot M.2 modules in B and M positions use up to two PCI Express lanes and provide wider compatibility at the same time, while M.2 modules with only one slot in M position use up to four PCI Express lanes; both examples can provide SATA storage devices. Socketed M.2 sockets are called “socket 2 configuration” or “socket 2”, while sockets that are switched for four PCI Express lanes (PCIe × 4) are called “socket 3 configuration” or “socket 3”.
