Intel has finally confirmed the existence of its upcoming Razor Lake-AX processor, which has been the subject of numerous leaks over the past few months. According to South Korean publication The Elec, Intel executive Cho Min-sung unveiled the company’s future robotics roadmap at the “Semiconductors Powering Humanoid Robots” conference on October 16, announcing that Razor Lake-AX is planned for 2028 and will feature approximately 700 TOPS of artificial intelligence computing performance.

For context, Intel’s current Panther Lake-based robotics platform offers up to 180 TOPS of unified AI performance. The company plans to introduce Nova Lake for robotics applications in early 2027, followed by Razor Lake-AX in 2028. The latter theoretically delivers nearly four times the AI computing power compared to Panther Lake; however, Intel did not specify the numerical basis for this figure or the individual contributions of the CPU, GPU, and NPU.

Razor Lake-AX, initially rumored under the name Nova Lake-AX as a high-performance SoC designed to compete with AMD’s Strix Halo lineup. Subsequent leaks suggested the chip could feature 16 or 32 Xe3P GPU cores, potentially making it one of Intel’s most powerful integrated graphics solutions. Another report indicated that Razor Lake-AX might include package-on-top memory similar to Lunar Lake, thereby providing the significant memory bandwidth that a large iGPU would require.

There were also some interesting developments regarding the processor architecture. Leaker Jaykihn previously claimed that Razor Lake-AX would reuse Nova Lake’s Coyote Cove P-cores and Arctic Wolf E-cores instead of the newer Griffin Cove and Golden Eagle cores expected in the rest of the Razor Lake family. Additionally, it was reported that the AX variant would not feature the large Last Level Cache (bLLC) that has been the subject of rumors for other Razor Lake processors.

Interestingly, Intel’s latest announcement positions Razor Lake-AX as more than just a potential rival to AMD’s Ryzen AI Max processors. The company is also targeting the field of humanoid robotics, which requires significant on-device computing power for perception, decision-making, and real-time control. According to The Elec, Intel expects customers to begin mass-producing autonomous mobile robots in 2027 and humanoid robots in 2028.

Intel already offers the Panther Lake-based Robinson Bay robotics development platform, along with software tools such as OpenVINO, Physical AI Studio, and Robotics AI Suite. Razor Lake-AX can ultimately provide significantly more computational power for these workloads without relying on a dedicated GPU.

Nevertheless, Intel has not yet confirmed whether Razor Lake-AX will also be available in traditional laptops and mini PCs; however, it would make little sense to validate a widely rumored platform solely for robotic use. The 700 TOPS performance target has also not been backed up with details regarding power consumption, memory capacity, or graphical performance. Still, the latest announcement specifies a concrete timeframe for the processor and implies that Intel is preparing a serious high-performance APU offering for 2028.
