  • Spotify has tightened its stance on family plan sharing, requesting that members complete in-person dynamic QR code address scans.
  • Unverified users are required to complete their scanning within seven days, otherwise they will be downgraded to the free tier and face a 12-month ban from joining shared Family or Duo plans.
  • Since it’s impossible to take screenshots of these dynamic QR codes, subscribers bypass this verification by sharing their screens across multiple devices.

Spotify, hane konumuna ilişkin kuralların uygulanmasını sıkılaştırırken, birkaç Premium Aile planı abonesi birden paylaşımlı planlarından çıkarıldı. Yayın devi, tüm üyelerin plan yöneticisiyle aynı yerde ikamet etmesini sağlamak için aile planı paylaşımına yönelik denetimleri artırıyor.

An increasing number of users are reporting that Spotify Family plan account holders are suddenly being asked to re-verify their addresses, particularly when they are not located in the same place as other users on the plan. This re-verification appears to be done by scanning continuously refreshed QR codes face-to-face between the plan manager’s device and the member’s phone to confirm that they live in the same household.

Since the QR code refreshes every few seconds, using screenshots doesn’t work. However, users resort to screen sharing instead, using multiple devices to successfully scan the QR code on one of them and bypass the verification.

According to Spotify’s support documentation, plan members have seven days to complete the QR code scan after receiving the re-verification notification. If a member misses this deadline or fails to complete verification, they are automatically downgraded to the free, ad-supported tier. Additionally, they cannot join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months; however, they can subscribe to other individual plans.

This is not Spotify’s first attempt to crack down on subscription sharing. The platform experimentally tested GPS controls in 2018 and formally updated its global terms in 2019 to require periodic location verification. However, user reactions to privacy concerns led Spotify to soften its stricter stance.

Other competitors in the music and video streaming space routinely enforce household-based audits, typically involving periodic Wi-Fi connection checks to verify that all members of a family plan reside in the same household. If you share a family plan with people you don’t live with, such as friends, you can expect this tightening to increasingly affect both Spotify and other services in the coming days, as platforms seek to improve their ARPU by steering plan sharers toward their individual plans.
