Farside of the Moon
The Far Side is a single-panel comic strip created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and Universal Press Syndicate. The strip ran from January 1, 1980, to January 1, 1995, when Larson retired as a cartoonist.
The comic’s surrealistic humor is frequently based on:
- Uncomfortable social situations and improbable events
- An anthropomorphic view of the world
- Logical fallacies and impending bizarre disasters
- Twisted references to proverbs or the search for meaning in life
Larson’s frequent use of animals and nature in the comic is commonly attributed to his background in biology. The strip was distributed by more than 1,900 daily newspapers, translated into 17 languages, and compiled into various formats including calendars, greeting cards, and 23 compilation books.
Following a 25-year hiatus, Larson began drawing new strips for the comic through its official website in July 2020. His work was recognized with several prestigious awards, including the National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award (1985 and 1988) and the Reuben Award (1990 and 1994). Additionally, the strip won the 2020 Webby People’s Voice Award for Humor in the category Web.
