Infrastructure

Infrastructure refers to the collective set of facilities and systems that serve a country, city, or other specific area. It encompasses the essential services and physical structures required for economies, households, and firms to function effectively. Infrastructure is composed of both public and private components, including roads, railways, bridges, airports, public transit systems, tunnels, water supply, sewers, electrical grids, and telecommunications (including internet connectivity and broadband access).

In a broader sense, infrastructure is defined as the “physical components of interrelated systems providing commodities and services essential to enable, sustain, or enhance societal living conditions” while maintaining the surrounding environment. Due to the significant societal transformations required to mitigate and adapt to climate change, contemporary discourse regarding infrastructure increasingly emphasizes sustainable development and green infrastructure. This global priority is reflected in international policy through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Sustainable Development Goal 8: “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.”
